ULRIKE MALOTTA, mezzo-soprano

Born in 1989 in Munich, Ulrike Malotta began her vocal studies with Tanja d’Althann. She has actively participated in masterclasses imparted by Christa Ludwig, Christian Gerhaher, Helmut Deutsch, Andreas Scholl, Angelika Kirchschlager, Rudolf Piernay, and Helmuth Rilling; she was selected as a scholarship holder by the Stuttgart International Bach Academy, by the Walter & Charlotte Hamel Foundation, and by the Bach Concert Society in Frankfurt. Ulrike Malotta was a prizewinner at the 2015 Salzburg Mozarteum International Summer Academy. She is currently studying in the vocal class of Prof. Hedwig Fassbender at the Frankfurt Academy of Music and the Performing Arts.

On opera stages, the young mezzo-soprano has already been seen and heard on many occasions. Thus, for instance, she was Cristina in Donizetti’s I pazzi per progetto (stage direction: Karsten Wiegand); she covered the roles of Ramiro in Mozart’s La finta giardiniera (stage direction: Lydia Steier), the Third Lady in The Magic Flute (stage direction: Doris Heinrichsen), Endimione in Cavalli’s La Calisto (stage direction: Cordula Däuper) and The Witch in a Frankfurt Opera children’s version of Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel (stage direction: Dorothea Kirschbaum).

One of Ulrike Malotta’s further specialties is concert vocal performances. She has already worked together with ensembles such as Le Concert Lorrain, L’arpa festante, La Banda, Collegium 1704, the Berlin Academy of Early Music, the Bochum and Munich Symphonies, Munich Radio Symphony Orchestra, Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Bamberg Symphony and the Balthasar Neumann Choir. She has sung the solo contralto part in Bach’s St John Passion with Concerto Köln and the Bavarian Radio Choir, conducted by Peter Dijkstra – a performance that has been recorded on CD and released by the BR Klassik label.

Her frequent guest appearances have met with great success: at the Prinzregententheater, the Herkulessaal and the Gasteig (all in Munich), at the Alte Oper (Frankfurt), at the Bamberg Konzerthalle, and at the Rodulfinum in Prague. She has collaborated with conductors such as Alexander Liebreich, Václav Luks, Lars Ulrik Mortensen, Ainars Rubikis and Ulf Schirmer. Malotta has also gone on tour to Belgium, Austria, Italy, the Czech Republic, Russia, Norway, and Switzerland.

Ulrike Malotta cultivates a passion for the Lied genre. Thus she has performed on stage together with pianists Helmut Deutsch, Hilko Dumno and Götz Payer. She recently appeared with the Schumann Quartet in a Lied programme at the deSingel auditorium in Antwerp.

For the 2017/2018 season, Ulrike Malotta is looking forward to going on tour with Saint-Saëns’s Christmas Oratorio with the Basel Chamber Orchestra and Camerata Vocale Freiburg, and to a concert performance of Carl Loewe’s passion oratorio Das Sühnopfer des Neuen Bundes with the Arcis Vocalists and L’arpa festante, which will also be recorded for Bavarian Radio and Oehms Classics.
