YEREE SUH, soprano

Korean soprano Yeree Suh, who is regularly invited to perform at outstanding concert venues and opera houses, has made her professional début in 2003 as La Ninfa in Monteverdi’s L'Orfeo conducted by René Jacobs, and covered the same role one year later at the Deutsche Staatsoper (Berlin) and at the Theater an der Wien (Vienna). Since then she has been collaborating with the most prominent conductors in the field of early music: Philippe Herreweghe, Ton Koopman, Sigiswald Kuijken, Václav Luks, Andrea Marcon, Andreas Spering, Jean-Christophe Spinosi und Masaki Suzuki. With Concerto Köln and German actor/entertainer Harald Schmidt she has gone on tour in the role of Mademoiselle Silberklang in Mozart’s Der Schauspieldirektor.

At the same time, Yeree Suh has achieved international prominence in impressive renditions of contemporary repertoire. Thus, for instance, she sang the European première of Matthias Pintscher’s fantasia With lilies white with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester conducted by Kent Nagano; she sang George Benjamin’s A Mind of Winter with Frankfurt RSO led by Paavo Järvi, and Ligeti’s Mysteries of the Macabre with the Ensemble Intercontemporain under the baton of Susanna Mälkki. Further highlights in her career as an interpreter of new music include her renditions of Boulez’s Le soleil des eaux in Lucerne (with Pablo Heras-Casado) and in Seoul (with Peter Eötvös). Ms Suh’s performance of Boulez’s Pli selon pli thrilled audiences, critics and colleagues at Berlin Music Festival with the Bamberger Symphoniker conducted by Jonathan Nott, and later with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Thierry Fischer. Several renditions of Unsuk Chin’s Akrostichon-Wortspiel have also received highest accolades, for instance with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.

Ms Suh’s début recording “Musik der Hamburger Pfeffersäcke” with the Hamburg Elbipolis Baroque Orchestra was released to great acclaim in 2008. Her other recordings include the role of Belinda in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas (with Leonardo García Alarcón on the Ambronay label), works by Judith Bingham (on the Resonus Classics label), Handel’s Dixit Dominus under the baton of Pierre Cao, Bach’s Easter Oratorio, further cantatas for solo soprano (including BWV 52) and other assorted Bach cantatas with Sigiswald Kuijken, Orff’s Carmina Burana (on the ZigZag Territoires label), “A Schubertiade” (with Jos van Immerseel), and Respighi’s Lauda per la Natività del Signore (with the Berlin Radio choir on the Carus label).

Yeree Suh has recently appeared with the Philharmonia Orchestra (London); she has participated in several productions of Orff’s Carmina Buranawith conductors including Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and she has guested at the Berlin Music Festival in Schoenberg’s Jakobsleiter with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester under the baton of Ingo Metzmacher.

In the 2016-2017 season, Yeree Suh has sung vocal recitals in South Korea with Jos van Immerseel and Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with Anima Eterna. Once more she has performed works by Pierre Boulez: Le Visage Nuptial at the Vienna Konzerthaus with ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra under Cornelius Meister, and a series of concerts dedicated to the memory of Boulez at Edinburgh International Festival with the BBC Radio Symphony Orchestra, as well as with the Ensemble Intercontemporain at the Paris Philharmonie (both conducted by Matthias Pintscher). She has also sung a vocal recital at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées with musicians from the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

In this season, further projects with Jos van Immerseel will follow, among them Vier letzte Lieder by Richard Strauss as well as Beethoven's Choral Fantasy and 9th Symphony at the Alte Oper Frankfurt with Anima Eterna and Collegium Vocale Gent.

Yeree Suh studied voice at Seoul National University, then in the class of Harald Stamm at Berlin University of the Arts, and with Regina Werner-Dietrich in Leipzig. She specialized in early music with Gerd Türk at the Schola Cantorum in Basel.
