Sebastian Kohlhepp is one of the most successful and sought-after young German tenors on the international opera and concert scene.

Recently he gave his acclaimed début as Belmonte at the Salzburg Mozart Week (René Jacobs). At Stuttgart Opera he thrilled audiences and critics as Jason in Cherubini’s Medea. Last fall he sang Tamino in a widely acclaimed staging of The Magic Flute at Theater an der Wien.

Born in Limburg, Kohlhepp first trained at the local boys’ choir. After studying under Hedwig Fassbender in Frankfurt, he was engaged in Karlsruhe, where he learned a great number of important tenor roles.

For the 2013/14 season he switched to Vienna Staatsoper, where he sang Jaquino (Fidelio) and Froh (Rheingold), collaborating with conductors including Adam Fischer, Franz Welser-Möst, Dan Ettinger, Peter Schneider, and Jeffrey Tate.

From 2015 to 2017, Sebastian Kohlhepp was a member of the Stuttgart Opera ensemble. He achieved notable success as Lucio Vero in Il Vologeso (Jommelli). Further roles in Stuttgart included Alfred (Fledermaus), Ferrando (Così), Oronte (Alcina), Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni), and Lurcanio (Ariodante).

Guest engagements led him to perform as Tamino at Basel Theatre and as Don Ottavio at Cologne Opera.

In concert appearances, Kohlhepp collaborates with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, B’Rock, Capella Augustina, Collegium Vocale Gent, Collegium 1704, Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, Stuttgart Chamber Choir, NDR Choir, and the RIAS Chamber Choir.

In late 2018, Kohlhepp will perform his US début with the Boston Symphony (Andris Nelsons), and will participate for the first time in a Hamburg Ballet production (Brahms’ Liebeslied Waltzes).

Kolhhepp’s multiple talents are featured in a series of recordings. The complete recording of Bach’s Chorale Cantatas (Spering) received the 2017 Echo Klassik Award. Rene Jacobs’s new recording of the St. John Passion was distinguished with the ICMA Award.
